While transporting any oversized items like industrial machinery or any military equipment, it can always present a logistical challenge, if you are not very familiar with transporting such items. Typically, such shipments need special handling, additional permits, and optimized routing as they cannot travel on all kinds of roadways because of their size and weight.
Ship a Car, Inc. has sufficient facilities for heavy haul shipping and they have been providing such services to many industries. Also, they have a network of many different transporters all over the country and make arrangements for all kinds of loads.
The difference between any standard weight and overweight cargo
As per the federal regulations, for any commercial truck, the maximum permissible gross weight is 80,000 lbs. Now, if you subtract the weight of a truck, container, and chassis, etc., usually a shipper can fit about 44,000 lbs. in his container and stay within the federal limit.
Typically, a truck can operate a maximum of up to 90,000 lbs. in most of the states, and in certain states, this limit is up to 100,000 lbs. So, shippers can pack more cargo into a container. When you choose heavy cargo shipping then you can gain a major savings opportunity as you can ship within fewer containers the same volume of freight.
You must therefore work with an experienced heavy haul carrier to get this advantage.
Additional materials may also be needed
If any carrier transporting oversized loads then as per federal law it must be marked by a special indicator or must have specific travel accommodations. For example, the following may be needed:
1. Oversized Load banners
Both on the front as well as the rear of any vehicle that carrying the shipment must have yellow “oversized load banners”. Most signs are reversible with on one side a “wide load” sign and on the other side, an “oversized load” must be placed.
2. Safety flags
On the vehicle at the outermost corners, fluorescent red or orange flags may be placed.
Few states need that vehicles must be equipped with a rotating type of yellow LED lights.
4. Pilot cars
In a few states for accompanying wide loads, escort vehicles or “pilot cars” are needed. In certain cases, a shipment needs to travel either with a police escort or more than one pilot car.
When you are going for heavy haul freight then as per federal law, you will need appropriate documentation as well as permits before traveling. Typically, all these permits will be issued on a per-shipment basis.
While regulations vary from state to state, a few orders may also need city, county, or even municipality-specific permits. Most of the states will issue permits that will outline the amount of time that the oversized freight can travel which is usually 3 to 5 days, and also with details about the operating hours.
For a few commodities, there may also be a requirement of their own designated permit. As an example, if you are shipping heavy farming equipment through the state of Minnesota, then you will need permit for machinery, which is valid for 7 days.
